2-alarm structure fire causes evacuations in Delano


UPDATE (12h) – All evacuation orders have been lifted.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – Two-alarm structure fire at cold storage facility with ammonia on-site causes evacuations in Delano.

The fire started around 2:15 a.m. Friday morning in the Solorio and Sons cold store at 710 Glenwood Street, according to Pulse Point. Fire crews from the Kern County Fire Department were dispatched to the scene and located the large warehouse completely engulfed. While fighting the blaze, firefighters said they discovered two large tanks of ammonia. It was at this point that officials requested a response to two alarms.

HAZMAT teams responded due to the threat of an ammonia leak. Several agencies are on site and no injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the Kern County Fire Department.

The Delano Unified School District is two hours late due to smoke from the structure fire, officials said. Classes will resume at 10 a.m. Robert F. Kennedy High School is also two hours late, according to school officials. Delano high school is not affected. Officials say Cesar E. Chavez High School is also two hours late for those living near the structure fire.

“If you live or work in Delano between Eleventh Avenue South and First Avenue, between Dover Street East and Jefferson Street, on both sides of Hwy 99, please pay special attention to this post. There is also a shelter in place for the following surrounding areas: Eleventh Avenue South to Ninth Avenue, between Dover Street East to Jefferson Street on both sides of Hwy 99. Ninth Avenue Avenue South to First Avenue, between Dover Street East to Hwy 99.
