IT departments generally have three areas of responsibility: operations, infrastructure and maintenance, and management. CIOs generally have a senior executive status and manage all of the IT functions of an organization. These professionals design and implement cloud-based IT infrastructure for organizations. As part of this job, cloud architects must work closely with others to ensure that services meet the needs of an organization. They are also responsible for cloud security and risk management.
IT support specialist
IT support specialists provide one-on-one technical assistance to computer users in an organization. The people who do this work help people solve computer problems. They can also provide support for overall IT or cybersecurity functions.
Database developers create and operate computer databases that process and store information securely. They work with others to design database systems that support the needs of an organization. This may involve using coding to design systems and perform troubleshooting and maintenance.
IT security analyst
Computer security analysts work to protect computer systems from cyber attacks by creating and implementing security policies. Their responsibilities may include installing firewalls to protect digital data and developing disaster recovery plans in the event of a major data breach or loss. They can also work with penetration testers to identify system vulnerabilities.
Network administrators are responsible for operating the computer networks of an organization. Their tasks include the installation and maintenance of an organization’s digital networks. Their job also includes managing devices that use the network and keeping applications, such as email, up and running.
Also called system architects, computer systems analysts study an organization’s IT systems and procedures. Their responsibilities include implementing new hardware and software and working with managers to ensure IT meets the needs of the organization. A key part of this job is to ensure that the organization’s IT systems meet the needs of the business.
Also known as web developers, webmasters are responsible for the overall look and function of a website. This includes designing the site’s user interface and handling technical aspects, such as writing code or embedding graphics or videos. Additional responsibilities include creating test versions of websites and updating published content. Entry-level work in this role typically requires a bachelor’s degree.
Information technology is a vast, diverse and growing field. While IT pros can help reset an account password or install a new printer, their responsibilities extend far beyond these important but basic tasks. IT people use a variety of skills and apply their knowledge to develop real-world solutions for all types of business and personal technology problems.
